Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier, a Cru Classé de Graves located in Pessac-Léognan, is a testament to careful dedication under the leadership of Olivier and Anne Bernard since 1983. With a rich history dating back to 1865, the estate underwent significant replanting, reaching its peak in the early 2000s. Olivier Bernard, also a former President of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, oversees operations alongside co-director Rémy Edange and technical director Thomas Stonestreet.

Situated on the western flank of the appellation amidst gravel, black sand and clay, Domaine de Chevalier benefits from a unique microclimate influenced by its wooded surroundings. The estate’s elevated plateau, rising to 60 metres, exposes the vines to significant temperature fluctuations, frost risks and the advantageous freshness. Pessac-Léognan’s diverse soils, ranging from peyrosol gravel terraces to olluvial sands and pockets of heavy clay over Astéries limestone, contribute to the estate’s ability to produce both exceptional red and white wines.

Spanning 51 hectares (45 red, 6 white) in one go, Domaine de Chevalier produces a first wine (60%), a second wine from young vines (40%) and small quantities of a third wine. The commitment to quality is evident in recent vintages, with the 2016 being cited as a potential masterpiece. Made up of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2016 has a deep colour and a captivating nose of cherry, plum and star anise. The result is a generous wine, with flavours of blackcurrant supported by refined tannin and refreshing acidity.

The renowned gravel terraces of the Médoc find their unique expression at Domaine de Chevalier. Gravel, with depths of up to eight metres, covers rock formations that provide excellent drainage and are crisscrossed by small streams such as l’Eau Blanche and l’Eau Bourde. In this rich diversity, glimpses of mussel and seashell fossils in the limestone are reflected in the geological complexity. Domaine de Chevalier’s enduring reputation as one of the most beloved estates in Bordeaux stems from its ability to thrive in challenging vintages, with remarkable ageing potential and complexity in both red and white wines. A fierce commitment to quality, supported by a family heritage and innovative winemaking, confirms its position as a Bordeaux.
