Château Ausone
Château Ausone, a 1955 Premier Grand Cru Classé A, is an exceptional wine estate in St-Emilion that stands out for its exceptional quality and history. The estate is situated in a unique location, high above the village of St-Emilion, with only 7 hectares of vines, making it the smallest Bordeaux 1er Grand Cru Classé. The Vauthier family, led by Alain and daughter Pauline, proudly manage the estate. Pauline is not only co-owner but also the skilled winemaker, assisted by her siblings Anne and Edouard. Cellar Master Philippe Baillarguet and Vineyard Manager Laurent Vallet also contribute to Ausone’s success. Interestingly, there is no external consultant for the winemaking, but Sophie Aribaud works with the team on ‘viticultural’ issues.
Château Ausone stands out with its 100% classified vineyards, clinging to and growing on a steep slope surrounded by dry stone walls. With an altitude difference of 85 metres on the plateau and south-facing clay/limestone slopes, Château Ausone has a remarkable diversity of terroirs. The influence of limestone is prominent, and beneath Château Ausone there are quarries that were exploited from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Today, some levels are used for storing oak barrels.
The history of Château Ausone dates back to 1529, with the remains of a Roman villa at the foot of the slopes. The name Ausone became permanently attached to the estate in the 17th century, although it was previously known as Villeneuve and La Madeleine. Archaeological discoveries have revealed Roman and medieval remains, making Ausone steeped in history. In five centuries, Ausone has had only three families as owners, with Pauline Vauthier representing the twelfth generation.
Despite maturing 80 to 100% in new oak, the wines retain a delicate mineral character, a tribute to the influence of the limestone. The wine only improves after ageing, a masterpiece of richness, freshness and layering. The 2017 vintage was bottled in 2019 and is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc, supplemented with Merlot.
